Cameron’s U-Turn Causes Kenneth Clarke Some Pain

After Kenneth Clarke's ludicrous comments on rape The rank news have given him an equally ludicrous photo caption

After Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke sparked a furore with comments suggesting he drew a distinction between “serious, proper rapes” and others Mr Clarke was back in the news again yesterday.

David Cameron was accused of presiding over a ‘total mess’ on sentencing policy after he humiliated Kenneth Clarke by tearing up plans to halve  jail terms for serious offenders. The Prime Minister was forced to insist that the Justice Secretary had ‘plenty more fuel in the tank’ despite the controversy, but senior government sources expect him to be shown the door in a Cabinet reshuffle next year.

Right-wing Tory MPs expressed anger that Mr Clarke’s stance has undermined the party’s traditionally strong position on law and order.

But others warned the Prime Minister should stop ‘dumping’ on ministers (surely some mistake-Ed) over policies which Downing Street has previously agreed but abandoned because they have become controversial.
