Church Stunned By Monkey Fresco

An elderly woman has stunned Spanish cultural officials with her unorthorised attempts at restoring a prized Jesus Christ fresco.

Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) by Elias Garcia Martinez has held pride of place in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church near Zaragoza for more than 100 years.

The woman took her paintbrush to it after years of deterioration due to moisture in the church had eroded the painting. It is believed that over time she had attempted to restore the fresco to its original glory.Arts correspondent Ken Stott says the delicate brush strokes of Elias Garcia Martinez have been buried forever.

The once-dignified portrait now resembles a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic, he says, although others in the art world have seen something far more disturbing behind the haphazard brushstrokes.

The woman has told church officials that she was in the church praying when she suddenly heard an angel singing to her. Over a period of weeks Whilst she was in a trance she had used her big Bingo pen and a painting by numbers kit she bought for her grandson to fill in the gaps of the deteriorating fresco.

Some parishioners are refusing to enter the church until the fresco has been either restored to its former self or removed completely. Rumours that a painting by British artists Gilbert & George may replace the original fresco are yet to be confirmed.
